Nobody was good in that. Our girl did the best she could with awful material. Just wildly unfunny. Felt like I was watching something written in the 80s... that wouldn't have lasted one season. Yikes.
Did you not read what it is?? The vicar of Dibley was a very successful comedy show but this isn’t the show it’s a just a quick charity sketch and it’s not acting it’s taking the piss. I have absolutely no idea why people are saying things like “this wouldn’t have lasted one season” like open your eyes and read. Comic Relief is a huge charity abc they do a live Fundraiser on tv, with some silly prerecorded sketches and that the people taking part are just doing it for that for a really great cause. It’s not professional “material”…

This was for Comic Relief, not the actual show. They didn't have much time to write sketches for it.
LOL Yeah, “our girl” like “our team.” You know, that person we’re all fans of.
Anyway, I’m sure the show was fine. But there are plenty of good charity sketches out there. That was a bad one.
You’d think when doing something for charity, the writers would make an effort.
If you aren’t from the UK you wouldn’t know who most of the other celebs are (why that’s funny is contextual) and references to Fiona Bruce, John Bishop etc and things happening in the UK at the time, so a lot of it would just go over your head as it isn’t aimed at you. It was aimed squarely at UK viewers on the night.
It’s a light charity thing. Good and funny are subjective. What isn’t subjective is that several people clearly had zero clue what it was before they’d started commenting on it. I don’t comment on, let alone criticize, something that I have no, or don’t bother to get, context on. I’m often amazed when others lack that very basic filter. It’s like all those that read the headline and then comment on articles.
It’s not rocket science to guess that a lot of the humor in it is UK specific. You need to know those talking and what’s being referred to. Which the audience would.

Or you’d think that you’d know that you’re watching it a decade late and it isn’t aimed at you. Viewers would be watching it on the night of the telethon full of goodwill for the charity, very familiar with the original show, and would know pretty much everyone on screen alongside Emma. And that that would make it quite different.
People saying it was unfunny, got things like the Fiona Bruce jokes did you? No, thought not. I’m not saying it’s brilliant; it is what it is, but it’s not international nor was it ever intended to be.

Anyway, it's an objectively bad, lazy sketch. Context of actor cameos isn't necessarily funny on its own. "I know who this person is," isn't a joke.
I do understand what the Anglican church is and how it works. I got all the references. The jokes were bad. MICE bucket challenge. Get it?
And I knew it was for charity going in. I know what Comic Relief is. The funny thing is Comic Relief is notorious for actually being quite funny. Which is why this stands out as really bad.
Anywho, y'all enjoy the terrible comedy that means so much to you. I'mma go wait till Ems does something new.

It takes a certain type of person to call their view objective and then make out that everyone else is the problem. I’m sure you’re fun at parties. Yikes.
Bless that you think knowing what the Anglican Church and mice bucket challenge is means you got all the references. Just take that you got called out for being too harsh on a Comic Relief thing you didn’t get on the chin and move on.
Eden, and just to start a fully new discussion for no reason at this time. Em once said in an interview it's important to dream big when she was asked about utopias and also told how important they are for everyone: What do your comments thinks about this?

I echo what others have said. The minority that started critiquing it like a serious thing need to lighten the hell up
always felt like an attempt to anglicize the surreal out there irish comedy of Father Ted never quite worked for me sanded off too many edges but its fine for the audience it was aiming for
You do know that the Victor of Dibley existed before Father Ted??? So actually, you could say Father Ted was an Irish attempt of recreating an English comedy, but of course, it was fine for the audience it was aiming for

Never heard of them till this thread but googling shows Father ted first appeared by arthur matthews years before either show as a stand up character in 1980s and the show was written in 1990-1993. dermot morgan first speaks of the pilot they film in 1994 before its first shown in 1995 I dont think they can copy each other in this time frame

Channel 4 owned father ted it was still and english show...just written and starring Irish people, also vicar of dibley wasnt on during 1995 1996 when ted was in its prime
they only actually competed briefly during teds final season in 1998 when Dibley came back, and were written at different times
There's not much comparison or any idea of influencing each other Father ted is about crazy island were outlandish things happen thats not anything like reality while Vicar of Dibley is about a realistic English village not really similar aside from having religion in it.

meh they were out and written at a similar time on different broadcasters unlikely to have effected each other tbh
90s religious comedy wont work for a lot of young people today really it means nothing to them everything is so secular in uk/ireland/rest of europe since like the year 2000 but no need to get wound up about

I don't think it was aiming for different nationalities in its audience the target for Ted were late teens to mid 20s people from any background who were sick of religion and wanted it mocked in a surreal fashion.
VicarR of Dibley was for your more middle-aged audience who still quite liked the comfort of the local religious insulation and had a warmer vibe towards it.
NGL thought it was from the 2000s guess it just kept getting specials and it made it seem like that Ted had to end in 1990s as the actor died the day after the final episode or something wild like that!

Let's shift the discussion to something more interesting. Why do you think she did those two interviews last September? The one with Hollywood Authentic and the podcast with Jay Shetty? Obviously, the three-hour podcast provided plenty of material, but her feeling of being pigeonholed, her desire to step aside, had already been explained.
Based on the dates, if she started the master's program in September/October 2023—a mandatory two-year program—it means that by then, if she had passed everything, she would have already finished. While it's true there hasn't been any official confirmation that she's pursuing a doctorate, unlike with the master's, if she is doing so and was going to be secluded for at least another two or three years, what's the point of those two interviews together? "Here I am, I miss acting, but not the promotion, which I found demoralizing, goodbye" (obviously this is a simplification; she said much more). I'm asking this genuinely, to get your opinion. She also mentioned something she was working on that would be revealed soon (she just didn't want to spoil it to avoid creating hype).
The last "official" news was a podcast her brother recorded in April of this year, in which he mentioned at one point that she was studying at Oxford.
i think it was to explain why she doesnt act any more and to end her controversy with uk media who hate her dan and rupert now but it only became worse after it
