'Queen of the Tearling' author speaks about Emma Watson and the movie adaptation

[Version française]

Erika Johansen, author of 'The Queen of the Tearling', recently gave an interview to Hebban. Emma will be playing and co-producing the movie adatation.

It's been recently known that your book will be filmed. How does it work?
Erika: "As soon as I start to understand that, I'll let you know."

What went through your mind when you heard that Emma Watson (Hermione in the Harry Potter movies) will play the lead role in the film. Did you immediately think: that's Kelsea?
Erika: "My first thought was actually 'this is an excellent actress,' which for me, as a movie lover, is even better, but I have received many questions from others that come down to this: 'Is Emma Watson actually not too good-looking to play Kelsea?' and those questions bother me. Kelsea doesn't like it when her choices are being limited because she is ‘ordinary’, but she won’t let her lack of beauty define who she is. I think it’s incorrect to say that Emma Watson can’t play an ordinary girl because she’s too beautiful. These seem two different sides of the same fundamental problem: Society bases women’s worth, options and goals on their outer appearance. The question should never be “Does Emma Watson LOOK LIKE Kelsea?”, but rather “Can Emma Watson BE Kelsea?”. And I definitely think she can.
