Roberto Aguire: "I’m so happy to support Emma Watson in any way that I can"

Roberto was interviewed by Teen Vogue about Pretty Little Liars and was also about Emma and HeForShe.

You and Emma Watson have known each other ever since the Harry Potter days, and she's now moved into working with the U.N. as an ambassador. Have you talked to her about that?

Emma and I have been really close friends for years and years, so I’ve gotten to see the inside workings of her mind way before she launched HeForShe. It’s this beautiful thing for her to have given to the world. I think there was this idea that feminism was a women’s movement, and I really don’t think that’s true. I think men have a huge responsibility for women to be empowered and equal rights. I think it’s such a great thing that she was able to create.

I think men nowadays are very scared of the word ‘feminism.’ It has all of these negative connotations, and that’s the first thing we have to tackle is getting away from that. You’re a feminist if you want to support women and equal rights. That’s it. It’s that simple. That’s what the word at its heart implies: A man who is willing to see a woman, in every aspect of life, as an equal. So for me personally, I’m proud to say I’m a feminist. I have three sisters, and I can’t wait for them to go out and do amazing things in the world. I really support them and I think if you can’t want every woman to succeed to the best of her abilities, and have every opportunity you had as a man — that logic of not supporting that is not one that I understand. So I think it’s an amazing thing to be a part of, and an amazing thing that she’s done, and I’m so happy to support her in any way that I can.
