Emma Watson: "We have a responsibility to the characters"

[Version française]

Warner Brothers held a press conference last month in a teleconference from London with Emma, Daniel Radcliffe and Rupert Grint.

Emma was described as being "bubbling with enthusiasm and answers all questions gamely" and "Hermione through and through".

What she says about the movie being PG-13: It was a necessary leap to take despite the younger children "who are so passionate and love Harry Potter films. At the same time, they want to be faithful to the book. ... I think there is a balance."

About Harry and Ron's friendship: "I loved all the arguing. I thought it was really juicy. We've always got along perfectly, and I think it's much more realistic that they would argue and that there would be problems. So I thought it was great fun. And it makes for a lot of humorous relief from this quite dark book."

About the lack of scandals in the media: "We have a responsibility to the characters."

About Hermione and Ron's relationship: "I'm going to make Rupert really uncomfortable, but Ron and Hermione have to get it together! It's been so long. They're so wrong, and they're so right. And they just need to get on with it. If that doesn't happen, I'm just going to get really frustrated."

About the director Mike Newell: "I don't think Mike has ever held us back in any way." Newell, she said, pushed them to make their performances "real" and he also "really treats us like adults. He wasn't taking any slack. He was expecting us to be professional the entire time."

What Mike Newell says about the trio: "My worst fear was that [the trio of young actors] would have realized that they are absolutely the stars. … It wasn't the case. They know what they're worth, and they're still prepared to have a go at anything."

It was confirmed that both Emma and Daniel read the sixth "Harry Potter" book and are eager to get to some of the scenes spelled out for their characters; and they both still attend different schools and say the novelty factor of having Harry and Hermione in the student body wears off quickly.
