SHE GETS ALONG REALLY WELL WITH J.K ROWLING
We often say that J.K. Rowling, a genius and Harry Potter's billionaire mom, hides.
Well, not from Emma Watson. "I love her! I've known her for so long. She's very involved with the films, donc picture her in her ivory tower! We talk a lot via email." Does she know what happens in the last book? "Honestly? Yes. But I promised not to say anything." What beautiful corporatism. Generations pass but solidarity between witches stays.
SHE LIKES NUMBER 3 THE BEST
Miss Watson's favorite 'Harry Potter' is the third one, 'Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban'. "First of all, because I love the director, Alfonso Cuarón. If he had told me to jump off of a tower, I would have done it. And also because it's the most mature, the most committed. It's the first time that there's a world around Hogwarts. It gives layers for acting, depth to the script." It's also the one where magic is the most spectacular, where the young heroes reach a... diabolical level of sorcery. "Did you like that?" "Oh yes, it's darker, I love it!" She laughs. In the room, a dementor passes by.
SHE IS NOT IN LOVE WITH DANIEL RADCLIFFE
In England, one girl out of two dreams about him, maybe more, since we saw him naked on the London stage, in a remake of 'Equus'.
When Emma says she "gets along really well with Dan and Rupert and is very proud of them", it's strange. It sounds more like a salutation than something from the heart. I ask her of she saw Radcliffe at the theater, she answers she hasn't got the time yet, but she does plan on going: he is so brave to put his image in danger like that! The play has been going on for weeks and she didn't find the time to go applaud her good friend... Weird, isn't it?
SHE CONTINUES TO LIVE A LIFE ALMOST NORMAL
I ask Emma, if she went with me to Topshop, how many floors would we be able to go to before a crowd started to form.
She smiles: "Two. At least. I think they would leave us alone for a moment." I'm surprised: how, in a country where Prince William's ex-girlfriend can't even go buy bread, an actress that famous (80% of young English girls would have a poster of her in their bedroom!) can live a life quite normal? Don't people recognize her? "Well, they recognize me but they're really nice, quite discreet. In this country, it's not the public, it's the yellow press that's vile." On the private life side, the actress doesn't seem bothered by her fame: "Of course, girls are little minxies in front of someone who has a life… different from theirs. Boys too, I realized that quite early. But it doesn't stop me from having good friends, like everybody. Boys? (sigh) It's a bit more complicated. The fact THAT I'm famous, all that. They will have to understand that I can't change that, it's done, it's too late. They are the ones who have to change and have to accept my fame." "And have you met boys like that, Emma?" She smiles without answering. The charm on this young girl's, honestly, it smells of a pact with the forces of evil.
SHE STILL WILL STUDY FOR HER A LEVELS
Each filming of 'Harry Potter' lasts exactly 11 months, spread on two years.
Adding the special effects and the promotional tour, the young actress spends five months in Hermione Granger's skin, for the past seven years. Surrounded by adults, traveling the world to meet fascinating people: "Even Clinton and Madonna!" she specifies. 99% of young people would use this to give up on high school. Well, 99% of "muggles". Emma Watson is studying for her A levels. She never repeated a class: "I am not as good of a student as Hermione, but I am interested in studying. I like working hard, I like challenges, so I catch up with the classes I miss. And also, it was my parents' indispensable condition to continue filming." Emma Watson, 17, listens to her mom's threats and follows her advice. In conclusion, a woman with super powers. The filiation becomes more clear: in this family, one must be a witch from to daughter for generations.
SHE'S PART FRENCH
Not only her grand-mother from her mom's side is Breton, but Emma herself was born in France, on April 15, 1990.
She lived in Paris for five years, until her parents' divorce, both lawyers. When she followed her mom to Oxforshire, Emma had to learn English, which she barely spoke. Since then, she often travels to France: "My dad has a house near Chablis, I learnt how to ski in Méribel, I go there every year. I barely speak your language, but when I will have the time, I want to live and study in Paris. France is the sweet life." English people burnt Joan of Arc because she was French and a witch. Is Emma Watson safe in the country she lives in?
SHE WAS PICKED AMONG 15 000 GIRLS
The first time she heard the name of 'Harry Potter', Emma Watson was 8 and at gym class.
In front of her friend who recommends her to read "a great novel about wizards", she said "Harry... Potter? What a stupid name!" Two years later, she was picked among 15 000 girls to play Hermione, the hero's best friend and only girl of the group. Meanwhile, she got addicted to J.K. Rowling's series. "My dad was reading my little brother and I a chapter every night, it was our ritual. We were big fans. When I learnt there was a movie being made, I joked to my family: 'I' going to play in it, it's made for me.'" A few weeks later, at school, when she was called to the head teacher's office she was joking anymore. What could the little witch of Oxfordshire have done wrong? She simply had won a poetry recital, meaning a ticket for the official Harry Potter casting.
Emma Watson remembers the rest of the process, which lasted several months and involved many hurdles, less clearly. But she does remember the morning the phone finally rang: “They said they hadn’t chosen the other children yet, but that I was in. I had dreamed so much about that phone call! Strangely enough, I panicked at first. I told Dad, ‘My life is going to change, I know it.’ I was 10 years old. I was right.” Seven years and five shoots later, she still remembers the strange period that followed her selection, when it came to finding the actors who would play Harry and Ron: “It went on for months. They made me do lots of screen tests with different boys; it was weird.” I didn't have a say in it, of course, but I let out a squeal of delight when I found out it would be Dan (Daniel Radcliffe) and Rupert (Grint): I'd felt that special chemistry between the three of us." And then, after uttering the word "chemistry," Emma Watson takes on a look that's both very clever and perfectly mysterious. In the 17th century, you could be imprisoned for less than that.
« I AM NOT HERMIONE GRANGER (HER CHARACTER IN “HARRY POTTER” ) »
In the movies, Emma Watson is Hermione Granger, Harry Potter's classmate. In real life, she's a 17-year-old who casts a spell on you with an almost imperceptible charm. An encounter with this captivating actress, on the occasion of the release of the new installment, "Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix."
In this London living room, Emma Watson puts on a brave face: "I'm not Hermione Granger (her character in 'Harry Potter')! In reality, I'm the most normal girl in the world." Seeing her, lovely and slender in her skinny jeans, my mind is already made up. Normal, her? I was her age, I know. At 17, it's practically a given: you have a big bum, a penchant for overly layered cut, or pimples everywhere. And you give adults the silent treatment 100% of the time. The young woman in front of me is the exact opposite. Smooth skin, bright eyes, pearly white teeth, good-length hair—the young woman is graceful, talkative, charming. Suspicious. Obviously, Emma Watson is a witch, on screen and off. That's why.
