Hermione Grows Up
Emma Watson, who plays Hermione in the Harry Potter movies, tells how she - and her character - have changed.
AG: How has becoming famous affected your life?
Emma: My friends knew what I was like and who I was before I got the part, so our friendship hasn't changed. They just treat me the same. But I don't really go to school anymore. I have a teacher on set.
AG: You've worked with some very famous actors. What have they taught you?
Emma: I think I've learned more from the actors as people than as actors, if you know what I mean. Someone who really inspired me is Emma Thompson, who plays Professor Trelawaney in the latest movie. She's just so down-to-earth. She's a big star, but the first thing she did when she came on the set was introduce herself individually to every person in the cast.
AG: How has Hermione changed since the first movie?
Emma: In the first film, she's just arrived at a brand-new school, and she's nervous about that. She's trying to prove to people that she's great at all of her schoolwork. She's not really being herself. By the third movie, she's a bit of a rebel. She's had enough teasing. She storms out of a class and she punches Malfoy! She's got a great part in this movie.
AG: What has working on the Harry Potter movies taught you about yourself?
Emma: That I can laugh when I'm down. There have been lots of up and downs but I just take the good with the bad!
