"Emma Watson is a revelation" | 'The Bling Ring' Reviews

[Version française]

Emma Watson dominates The Bling Ring’s promotional material but her character, Nicki Moore, is more comic foil than protagonist. Moore (based on Alexis Neiers) is a mini-Paris Hilton with extra angst, whose celebrity obsession inadvertently media-trains her for when she gets caught. In front of the cameras she wells up, full of candy-sweet repentance. Among her peers she hides behind her Blackberry screen, only looking up to fire darts of hormonal disdain. She rolls her eyes, delivers withering “whatever”s and grimaces at the sartorial choices of her friends. It’s almost a scene-stealing performance – Hogwarts is a distant memory – but she just overcooks it at the end, lapsing into a too-easy LA parody. - CityAM

Emma Watson, in a radical departure from Hogwarts stereotyping, is very impressive as the supremely narcissistic and foxy Nicki Moore. She reels off the "oh my Gods!" as if she is a natural-born Californian and delivers lines like "your butt looks awesome" with such conviction that we're never quite sure whether she is playing her part tongue in cheek or not. - Independent

Watson is a revelation here as a brand-obsessed bad girl. - STLToday

With the exception of the Neiers character (Emma Watson, the best thing about the movie by far) - TechnologyTell

Emma Watson probably has the most lively performance here as a spoiled brat, but her character isn’t well drawn. - FilmGeekCentral

Building on The Perks Of Being A Wallflower, Watson offers a pitch-perfect delivery of Valley-speak and self-delusion. - EmpireOnline

Emma Watson is sensational as Nicki, an underage club girl and actress wanna-be, who lives in a universe of Valley Girl narcissism eons away from Hogwarts. "I wanna rob," deadpans Nicki, a character based on Alexis Neiers, who negotiated her own E! reality show. It's hilarious when Nicki tells the media she sees her arrest as a learning experience: "I wanna lead a country one day, for all I know." Talk about laughs that stick in your throat. - RollingStones

One of the things that I would love to mention is that Emma Watson has surprised me in the past three years specifically. Not being the biggest fan of Harry Potter, I wasn't the one who immediately expected success. Alas, there was My Week with Marilyn, which was a rather bit part. Then it kept getting juicier until last year's The Perks of Being a Wallflower, which was a solid coming of age story, though it was a little too trite and sappy for me. Watson appears to be having a lot of fun with her post Harry Potter career at a more successful level than any of her costars from the first days. It is also impressive to see her range. It hasn't been used in much, but I do feel like if she keeps taking on ambitious roles, we're only years away from a legitimate Oscar nomination. The Bling Ring could be if the category is weak overall, but I don't know if vapid characters do well in the Best Supporting Actress race, especially with a lack of sympathy or morality. - TheOscarBuzz

Emma Watson's turn may be the spark her career needs to disassociate her as just the Harry Potter star. Maybe that will be enough credibility to get her an Oscar nomination. Who knows, but this is easily my biggest wing and a prayer of any film getting an Oscar nomination this summer. - TheOscarBuzz

That immediately kills any prospect of suspense but it does show us what a decent actress Watson is. Her nasal Californian accent is pitch perfect and the look of dead-eyed self-delusion is pure E! Entertainment. - DailyStar

Much creepy attention has been lavished on photos doing the rounds of Emma Watson pole dancing (Hermione’s legal!) in ‘The Bling Ring’. But the real story here isn’t the good-girl-goes-bad stunt casting; it’s that Watson can act. Against the odds, the Harry Potter star gives a sharp, knowing smart performance as Nicki, one of a gang of spoiled rich Californian brats robbing the houses of celebs who, like, totally deserve it. - TimeOut

Watson’s performance is the real revelation here. After eight movies as Hermoine in the “Harry Potter” series this young actress seems to be determined to find roles that will showcase her acting and stretch her talent, such as her wonderful turn in last year’s “The Perks Of Being A Wallflower” and her hilarious cameo in the current “This Is The End.” Here she plays Nicki as a politician-in-waiting. Whatever happens, she’s all spin and positioning, ready to change with the circumstances. It’s a performance that makes you eager to see what she will do next. - NortShoreMovies

The main reason to see The Bling Ring is Emma Watson. She proves once again that she’s much more than a pretty face. Her American accent is fine, and she shows the same intelligence and flair for comedy that she demonstrated in The Perks Of Being A Wallflower. She’s curiously likeable, even when playing a dislikeable person. She finds the vulnerability inside a brattish American teenager and has enough going on behind her eyes to make you interested in whether she reforms or not. All those years playing Hermione have given her the kind of acting tuition you just can’t buy. [...] Miss Watson is the pick of the cast. She perfects a whiny voice of spoiled entitlement, especially when arguing with her equally self-centred, foolish mother (Leslie Mann). Those two are so funny together that I ended up wishing the entire film had been built around them. - Dailymail
